Detailed Consultation Information

EMDR Consultation process:

Clinicians should bring in detailed information about the case including:
  • Presenting problem and Diagnosis
  • History
  • Current Circumstances
  • Level of rapport/safety with therapist.
  • DES & taxon scores (adults) or A-DES (adolescent), & ACEs score.
  • Current phase of EMDR, and if completed: image, NC, PC, emotion, body sensation, SUDs, VOC.
  • A question! What do you need help or support with?
These items must be clear before moving on, so if anything is not yet clear, this is where consultation will start. Then, additional topics can be discussed including: resourcing, blocked processing, general teaching, additional resources, and more! Andrea may also point you toward external resources at times including books, trainings, research articles, etc.Schedule Now!

General Consultation:

This consultation will review basic EMDR cases, to help clinicians follow the standard EMDR protocol. EMDR should always be followed as close as possible to the standard protocol, using even basic adaptations like interweaves only as needed, and returning back to the protocol again. Because of this, it is critical that clinicians really learn this protocol before moving on to advanced practices. This will help clinicians know when and how to adapt it with thoughtfulness and skill when they are truly ready.

Complex Consultation:

There are times where a client’s presentation may be more complex than a clinician feels certain about using EMDR with. These are good situations to contact an EMDRIA approved consultant for consultation. A consultant can help you tease out these complexities and help determine if the standard protocol and the current level of EMDR skill will properly attend to the client’s need. When a client’s presentation requires more advanced protocols, this consultation may move into advanced consultation if the clinician is developmentally ready to use advanced adaptations (as discussed above).

Advanced Consultation:

There are numerous advanced EMDR practice protocols which have their rightful place in EMDR. When a clinician has gone to an advanced training, it is beneficial to continue Consultation surrounding the implementation of this new skill. Additionally, when a clinician demonstrates competency over the standard protocol and a client’s presentation and complexity requires adaptations, consultation can provide an opportunity to teach new EMDR skills for advanced adaptations.

EMDR Basic Training Consultation:

Congratulations on starting your EMDR journey! You’ve made a great decision!

Please note: This section is specifically for those of you still working toward completing your basic training requirements. Please also confirm that your EMDR training is through an EMDRIA approved provider.*2

Why consultation?

EMDR is a standardized, yet complex, therapy model which makes most sense when practicing as you learn it. The best way to learn EMDR is to have classroom teaching, peer practice, followed by practice with clients which is then consulted on during consultation with an approved consultant. Therefore consultation is both required and a best practice to keep clinicians and clients engaged in ethical practice and to provide you with the most successful learning!

Requirements:

All EMDRIA approved EMDR basic trainings require a minimum of 10 hours of consultation prior to receiving a certification of completion for the basic training.

How are these requirements fulfilled?

The initial training model for basic training was 2 extended weekends of classroom and practicum experience, with 5 consultation hours completed after each weekend. However, new models have been created, and some EMDR basic trainings include the 10 hours of consultation in their trainings alongside the practicum hours. Check with your training to determine whether your consultation hours were included or expected completion is outside of the official training hours.

Who can provide consultation?

All basic trainings require trainees receive consultation from EMDRIA approved consultants. However, each basic training organization or facility may create additional restrictions or guidelines for the basic training consultation hours.*1   In some cases, prior approved Consultants-In-Training area allowed, and in others they are not. In some cases,  there are additional and unique restrictions in addition to EMDRIA approved consultant status the training is including.

Therefore: Please check with your basic training provider regarding who can provide your consultation hours.

In many circumstances, Andrea Patten, LICSW is eligible to provide Basic Training Consultation. So please reach out if interested. If your training does have additional restrictions, please inform Andrea and she can let you know if it is a match.

Andrea would be happy to provide consultation for basic training purposes.

*1: These additional requirement restrictions only apply to the 10 basic training consultation hours. Once you have received your certificate of completion for basic training, any additional consultation can be from any EMDRIA approved consultant.
*2: Clinicians who are trained by EMDRIA approved trainings may consider themselves EMDR trained. If your training program is not EMDRIA approved, you will need to complete a full basic training through an EMDRIA approved program. While there are other EMDR learning events that are not EMDRIA approved, these are introductory and not considered satisfactory for basic training requirements.

EMDR CERTIFICATION:

Congratulations on deciding to take the journey toward certification!

Please note:  you must have completed your basic training through an EMDRIA approved provider and have competed all 10 hours of consultation (which may or may not have been included in your training program) before you can move toward Certification.

Consultation Requirements:

20 hours of consultation are required for Certification. These can be split between group and individual hours.  Consultation must first ensure that you are competent on the standard protocol before consulting on advanced protocols.

Path to EMDRIA Certification:

  • Completing an EMDRIA approved Basic Training (including 10 consultation hours).
  • State License/certification/registration as a mental health professional
  • Two years of clinical practice in your field of licensure
  • Having conducted at least 50 EMDR sessions with at least 25 clients.
  • 20 hours of consultation approved by EMDRIA.
At least 10 hours individual EMDR case consultation.
Remaining 10 hours may be obtained through group consultation
  • Letter(s) of recommendation from any EMDRIA Approved Consultants who provided consultation toward hours, regarding applicants utilization of EMDR.
  • Two letters of recommendation regarding professional utilization of EMDR in practice, ethics in practice, and professional character.
  • Completion of at least 12 hours of EMDRIA Credits in EMDR .
  • Certification will be reviewed every two years and will require documentation of 12 EMDRIA Credits and a renewal fee.

Note: *These requirements may change over time, so please check EMDRIA for confirmation and to apply.

So, when should I apply for certification?

Ask yourself if you have met the criteria and if you feel you have a competency in  understanding and utilizing EMDR with adherence to the basic standardized protocol. Your consultant will need to be able to speak to this competency in the letter to EMDRIA on your behalf. Individual and Group Consultation allows clinicians to gain this competency and allows the consultant to observe the growth and formation of this competency. Many consultants will ask for or require videos of your use of EMDR with actual clients and require role plays during consultation to observe use of EMDR and adherence to standard protocol. While this is not currently required by EMDRIA, it is standard practice among many EMDRIA approved consultants.

The most important thing to remember is to apply for certification when you feel you are qualified and effective in utilizing EMDR in your practice.

How long does it take to get certified?

There is no required minimum (or maximum) amount of time to complete the Certification process. Every clinician has a different pace and attitude they take toward becoming EMDRIA Certified. The process can take approximately year to a few years.
